THE ASCENSION OF JESUS CHRIST – ACTS 1:1 – 11
Ascension is the act of ascending, meaning going up. In Acts 1:1-11, the Bible records the ascension of Jesus to heaven. After the resurrection from the dead, Jesus appeared to the disciples during the period of forty days and He spoke to them about the kingdom of God. He instructed them not to leave Jerusalem but wait until they received the promise of God, which is the Holy Spirit.

On the day Jesus was to be taken up, the disciples asked whether He was going to restore the kingdom to Israel (at this time, Israel was being ruled by the Romans). Jesus answered and said, “It is not for you to know times and seasons which had been fixed by God.” However in Act1:8, He said, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.”

Immediately He finished saying this, as they were looking on, He was being lifted up and a cloud took Him out of their sight. While they were looking into heaven, two men in white robes asked them why they stand looking into heaven. They said Jesus, who was taken up to heaven, will come back in this same way.
